Dali Lama Honored in DC to China's Chagrin

The 14th Dali Lama, a man of peace and great wisdom was given The Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor bestowed on civilians by the U.S. Govt. Sounds like Bush got some 'splainin' ta do cuz China ain't none too happy. Considering the extent they have a grip on our economy, this could have far-reaching implications. I do appreciate any support for Tibetan Autonomy and any attention to their plight at the cruel hands of intolerant on the world stage. Yet, considering the tensions that are threatening global stability, causing a stir is, perhaps, unwise at this juncture. Still, I support a free Tibet, or at least an autonomous one.

Change Comes to the Northlands

The direct impact of climate change is very real to the good People of the Snows. As their Homes, Towns and Way of Life melt into the past, the pain and anxiety they face is daunting. Check out these photos and a great story, courtesy Mother Jones.

Photo Essay: Sea Change
Julia Whitty and Robert Knoth Reportage by Getty Images September/October 2007 Issue

Get used to it: real estate falling into the sea. And not just beach houses and seaside time-shares. Think towns and cities. These images of Shishmaref village on Alaska's remote west coast reveal the tip of a terrain melting so fast it will carry whole cultures away with it—rich and poor, polluters and nonpolluters, all vulnerable to the great leveler, the ocean. You think South Pacific island nations and remote Arctic outposts will be the only victims? Wrong. Because no matter what we do on the carbon emissions front in the coming decades, the world ocean is forecast to warm and rise for the next millennium or more. Pictures like these will soon be commonplace

In Shishmaref, calamity has already arrived. The village of 600 Inupiaq lies on the fragile barrier island of Sarichef, where sea ice forms later each year, exposing the land to autumn storms that carve away 50 feet or more of shoreline a season. Two houses have slipped into the sea; 18 others have been moved back from the encroaching ocean; others buckle from the melting permafrost. Ten million dollars has been spent on seawalls, to no avail. Residents have concluded permanent resettlement is their only option. But considering America has yet to seriously tackle New Orleans' sea-level problems, no one on this distant edge of the Chukchi Sea imagines the $180 million needed to relocate Shishmaref will be easy to come by. And Shishmaref is not alone. A 2004 Government Accountability Office report found that of Alaska's 213 Native villages, 184 are battling floods and erosion, while another assessment foresees that in the coming decades, Alaska will require $6.1 billion to repair global warming's domino effect of fallen bridges, burst sewer pipes, and disintegrating roads. Worldwide, the situation is more dire, more expensive: Oxfam suggests the United States owes $22 billion, or 44 percent—our polluting share—of the $50 billion needed each year for poor nations to adapt to climate change.

Pelosi Draws a Line in the Sand(box)...
Speaker Pelosi has "come out swinging" against allegations that Congress is "kissing up" to GWB & Co. No one really thinks that, do they? I mean, what would give you that idea? Obviously the Madam Speaker is using this opportunity to spin, I, er, I mean clarify her position on the whole Iran thing. Courtesy Reuters via Raw Story.

Pelosi: Bush "must come to Congress" before attacking Iran

David Edwards and Greg Wasserstrom
Published: Sunday October 14, 2007

In an interview on ABC's This Week, Speaker Pelosi tells George Stephanopoulos that President Bush must get the approval of Congress before proceeding with an attack on Iran.

Just this week, the Senate passed a non-binding resolution designating Iran's Republican Guard as a terrorist organization in a move many observers fear will give President Bush the authority he needs to attack Iran. Pelosi disagrees, and doesn't plan on bringing up such a measure in the house.

"We don't believe that any of the authority the President has would allow him to go in without an act of Congress," she said, adding that the War Powers Act of the 1970s gives any president the power to retaliate against a country that has attacked the US. "But short of that," Pelosi said, "he must come to the Congress."

When asked about the Senate vote, Pelosi noted that it is unprecendented to declare a piece of another country's military a terrorist organization. She said, "Whatever Iran's impact is on our troops in Iraq should be dealt with in Iraq."

The Day of the Living Nightmare

Yet another Retired General has a bad report on Iraq. This time it was Gen. Sanchez, former commander of all forces in theater. The man is a decorated hero and career soldier, even if he was tainted by the Abu Ghraib prison scandal earning him the nickname "Dirty" Sanchez. More, courtesy of AP via The Drudge Report.
Oct 13, 7:48 AM (ET)

By STEVEN KOMAROW ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - The U.S. mission in Iraq is a "nightmare with no end in sight" because of political misjudgments after the fall of Saddam Hussein that continue today, a former chief of U.S.-led forces said Friday. Retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, who commanded coalition troops for a year beginning June 2003, cast a wide net of blame for both political and military shortcomings in Iraq that helped open the way for the insurgency - such as disbanding the Saddam-era military and failing to cement ties with tribal leaders and quickly establish civilian government after Saddam was toppled.

He called current strategies - including the deployment of 30,000 additional forces earlier this year - a "desperate attempt" to make up for years of misguided policies in Iraq.

"There is no question that America is living a nightmare with no end in sight," Sanchez told a group of journalists covering military affairs.

The Right Reverend Rubberized Homo-Hypocrite

Folks, I'd like to take a little time to relate a very sad, sad story. If you are a regular reader of The MUFF Report, you know that I am both a deeply spiritual person, yet sharply critical of all organized religions. Christianity is as valid a path to enlightenment and salvation as any other at it's core. Jesus' teachings, stripped of Pauline smegma and myopic, intolerant, apocalyptic dogma, point the way to a spiritual life where the needs of the poor and underprivileged are more important than what people do in the bedroom or who they do it with. Forgiveness and "judging not" are keystones in the foundation of His Gospel. Love, long suffering and nonviolent, is His Law. Jesus spoke against hypocrites, not homosexuals, which leads us to the sad, sad story of one of Reverend Jerry Falwell's top pastors in the Moral Majority that I am obliged to share, courtesy of The Smoking Gun.

OCTOBER 8--An Alabama minister who died in June of "accidental mechanical asphyxia" was found hogtied and wearing two complete wet suits, including a face mask, diving gloves and slippers, rubberized underwear, and a head mask, according to an autopsy report. Investigators determined that Rev. Gary Aldridge's death was not caused by foul play and that the 51-year-old pastor of Montgomery's Thorington Road Baptist Church was alone in his home at the time he died (while apparently in the midst of some autoerotic undertaking).

Aldridge served as the church's pastor for 16 years. Immediately following his death, church officials issued a press release asking community members to "please refrain from speculation" about what led to Aldridge's demise, adding that, "we will begin the healing process under the strong arm of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

"While the Montgomery Advertiser, which first obtained the autopsy records, reported on Aldridge's two wet suits, the family newspaper chose not to mention what police discovered inside the minister's rubber briefs.
Well, if you have the stomach, link here for the rest of the story. The thing that I don't get is, how did he hogtie himself? Plus his rubberized homoerotic fetish gear (which would seem difficult to suit up alone) and ass-packer are illegal (to buy) in Alabama! Some one should check on Rev. Haggard to make sure he wasn't down in Bama...

Whats up all you people? I just wanted to blog about our show last night. Well, we really needed that vibe! It was great to see everyone and share all of that fun with the crowd. I love that feeling of connecting with everyone. I kind of felt sorry for Chris Marsh, our bass player. Chris currently has a hernia and had to sit in a chair all night and play his bass. All the guys pitched in to move his equipment for him as well. Chris has a surgery scheduled sometime this month. Hopefully in a few months he will be back to his old rocking self and be able to move around again like he used to.

Here are some funny takes from the show last night:

Greetings everyone. Well, it's been awhile since old Russ has blogged for 'ya. The guys have been chillin' over at the studio for the last few nights. We've all been going through our own personal dramas. It's a trip how the studio can be a great escape from the everyday preasures. I think we'll just keep plugging away as a band. We seem to keep growing and that's a good thing.

Pronunc-i-cator in Chief

President Bush's UN speech with the phonetic spelling of many words was posted by accident on the UN website. When questioned about the President's language skills, or lack thereof by some in the press corps, White House spokesperson Dana Perino expressed outrage at the question but declined to answer the query. Of course, the on-line "error" was soon corrected, but not without causing some chaos and laughter first. Courtesy RawStory...
US President George W. Bush says "nuke-you-lar" not "nuclear," but on Tuesday visitors to the United Nations Internet site could get a handy, abbreviated presidential pronunciation guide for other challenging words.

A quickly remedied glitch momentarily gave visitors to the UN website a version of Bush's UN General Assembly speech that included phonetic spellings for world leaders, a former Soviet satellite, and at least one capital.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is "sar-KO-zee." Mauritania should be said "moor-EH-tain-ee-a." Kyrgyzstan sounds like "KEYR-geez-stan." And the capital of Zimbabwe President Robert "moo-GAH-bee" Mugabe is Harare "hah-RAR-ray."

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said such phonetic guidance is common but curtly rebuffed a questioner who wanted to know whether Bush has a hard time with certain names: "I think that's a offensive question. I'm going to just decline to comment on it."

"I don't know how the draft of the speech -- it was not final -- was posted, but it was, and it was taken down. There's really nothing more to say about it," she told reporters.

Ironically, one of the hardest names to pronounce, that of Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi, was not written out in phonetic form, and Bush only briefly stumbled over it before getting it right.

Bush Picks Hillary to Win Nomination
In his Infinite Wisdom, Duh Prez'dint has "picked a winner", so to speak. This story is ala Drudge Report.
Bill Sammon in the bombshell book, EVANGELICAL PRESIDENT, set for release Monday. “And therefore the person with the national presence, who has got the ability to raise enough money to sustain an effort in a multiplicity of sites, has got a good chance to be nominated.”

Breaking his vow not to play “pundit-in-chief” in the 2008 presidential race, Bush tells Sammon that Clinton ultimately will be defeated in the general election by the Republican nominee.

“I think our candidate can beat her, but it's going to be a tough race,” the president predicted in an Oval Office interview. “I will work to see to it that a Republican wins, and therefore don't accept the premise that a Democrat will win. I truly think the Republicans will hold the White House.

Current and former Bush advisers sounded less certain. “It's going to be a very close election,” said Karl Rove, who until this month was the president's top political strategist. “We are at this very narrow divide in politics.

The election “could go either way,” Vice President Cheney told Sammon, senior White House correspondent for the WASHINGTON EXAMINER, which will begin running excerpts from the book Monday. “Right now, we're sort of in the area where we're pretty evenly balanced on both sides

As for Obama, a senior White House official said the freshman senator from Illinois was “capable” of the intellectual rigor needed to win the presidency but instead relies too heavily on his easy charm.

“It's sort of like, 'that's all I need to get by,' which bespeaks sort of a condescending attitude towards the voters,” said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “And a laziness, an intellectual laziness.”

Autumnal Equinox Edition

Happy Mabon, Blessed Be!!!

Today is The Autumnal Equinox, the first day of Fall. Here is a definition of this sacred day from wicca.com
Mabon, (pronounced MAY-bun, MAY-bone, MAH-boon, or MAH-bawn) is the Autumn Equinox. The Autumn Equinox divides the day and night equally, and we all take a moment to pay our respects to the impending dark. We also give thanks to the waning sunlight, as we store our harvest of this year's crops. The Druids call this celebration, Mea'n Fo'mhair, and honor the The Green Man, the God of the Forest, by offering libations to trees. Offerings of ciders, wines, herbs and fertilizer are appropriate at this time. Wiccans celebrate the aging Goddess as she passes from Mother to Crone, and her consort the God as he prepares for death and re-birth.

Dollar Dives Down, Down...
Our beloved dollar is sinking in value against other foreign currencies, AP reports. Here are some excerpts from the story...
NEW YORK (AP) — The dollar hit a new low against the seemingly unstoppable euro Friday as the 13-nation currency broke through $1.41.

The currency of the 13 euro nations, which have more than 317 million residents and account for more than 15 percent of global gross domestic product, surged as high as $1.4119 before falling back to $1.4083 by late afternoon, above the $1.4076 it bought in New York on Thursday.

The U.S. dollar fell further against the Canadian dollar after reaching parity for the first time since 1976 on Thursday. One Canadian dollar bought $1.0068 in U.S. currency at its highest point Friday before edging down to 99.95 U.S. cents in late New York trading, barely beating 99.93 U.S. cents late Thursday.

The American currency weakened sharply this week on the back of a decision by the U.S. Federal Reserve to cut its benchmark rate by a bigger-than-expected half point to 4.75 percent. The central bank was responding to market turbulence in the U.S. and elsewhere in the fallout from the subprime mortgage crisis. (Read full story)
As I've said for some time: "Recent rapid home equity increases will eventually self-correct, (due to the global market pressures of trade deficits, war spending, tax cuts for the rich, no-bid contracts, corruption etc.), by dramatically depreciating in value, coupled with big interest rate increases and inflation of consumer goods and services."

Or put another way, way back in Feb. 2005, courtesy The Left Coaster:

We've found ourselves in a vicious circle:

- The value of the dollar falls, which means oil exporters increase the price in dollars so they still get the same value. We keep buying the oil regardless and send even more dollars overseas, which increases the trade imbalance and drives the value of the dollar down further. Lather, rise, repeat.

- As the dollar drops, foreign central banks don't want to be the last ones holding dollars (like South Korea), so they reduce their dollar holdings. Demand for the dollar drops, so the dollar falls, putting more pressure on foreign central banks to dump their losing investment in America. Lather, rise, repeat.

- As the dollar drops, inflation and interest rates increase, reducing Americans' buying power and consumption, stalling the American economy. A weaker economy increases the federal budget deficit, increasing the need for foreign buyers of U.S. treasury bonds, which raises interest rates and decreases the value of the dollar. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Trouble, trouble, boil and housing bubble... just wait until the interest rates double! In anticipation of currency depreciation, Big Biz uses inflation to ensure their own cash creation, pimpin' Lexus cars, takin' private jets to fabulous vacation spots so hot they got-a-lot, Empire built on pretense, it defies common sense that we let them do this, at our expense... Word up, Meshers OUT!!!

Go, Go Greenspan!!!

Former Head Fed Alan Greenspan has dropped a bomb upon the Repugna-cant Party in his new book, The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World.

The lifelong conservative reveals his personal, if redacted opinions and recollections about former presidents he's served under, the Iraq War, the housing bubble, irresponsible spending and power-mongering by the GOP-led congress leading to, in his own opinion, a deserved ouster last November, and an admission that the real motive in going to war was control of the Iraqi oil supply, just to point out a few highlights.

He has since tried to distance himself from an outright accusation of Bush's complicity, but does not reverse his opinion, and has decried as "unfair" liberal bloggers using his words to support the contention that GWB and Co. lied about the reasons for the invasion.

He also warns of a future shift from dollars to euros as the "reserve currency of choice." A devaluation of American currency of this magnitude would cripple the nation, resulting in a breakdown of the basic services that we, as a society, have come to rely on. His predictions are dire and the solutions are not simple.

The rats are jumping ship again, it would seem. Why this guy would wait to tell us this relevant information until after he stepped down seems disingenuous at best. Oh well, at least they cut the prime rate so we can go deeper in debt!!! Meshers OUT!!!

Vag-i-terian Rice and Bean Butt-rito with Hypocrite Sauce!

Wow, the depth of hypocrisy within the Repugna-can Party is reaching new lows. Case in point, take Ms.Condi Rice. Two articles I just read on RawStory.com elucidate the stark divide...

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice co-owned a home and shared a line of credit with another woman, according to Washington Post diplomatic correspondent Glenn Kessler, who reveals the information in his new book, The Confidante: Condoleezza Rice and the Creation of the Bush Legacy.

Kessler discussed the revelations with talk-show host and gay author Michaelangelo Signorile Friday on his Sirius Radio show.

According to the book, Rice owns a home together with Ms. Randy Bean, a documentary filmmaker who once worked with Bill Moyers. Kessler made the discovery by looking through real estate records.

Bean explained the joint ownership and line of credit to Kessler by saying she had medical bills which left her financially drained and Rice helped her by co-purchasing the house along with a third person, Coit Blacker, a Stanford professor who is openly gay.

Blacker later sold his line of credit to Rice and Bean.

When asked about the revelations on Signorile's show, Kessler "said he did not know if this meant there was something more to the relationship between the woman beyond a friendship."

Rice faced attacks from liberals in the gay community over the State Department's reluctance to rebuke Iran for the hanging of gay teenagers. The gay rights lobby Human Rights Campaign called on Rice in 2005 to condemn Iran's human rights abuses after the hanging of two gay teenagers, and to express indignation over "other horrific human rights abuses against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people across the globe."

Rice did not.

Signorile excerpted a brief quote from Kessler's book on his blog.

"After she became secretary of state, she came to a party at Blacker's house, kicked off her shoes, and began dancing through the night to rock and and roll," Kessler wrote. "Blacker, who is gay, wanted to show his partner how tight her behind is; he postulated that if he aimed a quarter at her butt, it would bounce off like a rocket. He was right. Rice, who was dancing, didn't realize what he had done until everyone began laughing hysterically. She was flattered -- and proud."

Secretary Rice has typified the juxtaposition that many Republicans have between their public and private lives," Hudson said. "Privately, she is very supportive of gays. "Condoleeza Rice may or may not be gay but she is in a relationship which legitimately raises these kinds of questions. Before he took office, the president and first lady had close relationships with a number of gay men, including Charles Francis, whose brother managed Bush's reelection campaign for Texas governor."

Now contrast this article with the previous one, and you will see the horrific double standard perpetrated by the Religious Reich-Wing....
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Religious freedom conditions have worsened in insurgency-wracked Iraq as well as Egypt, while communist China has embarked on a crackdown on foreign missionaries ahead of the Olympics, the US government warned in a report Friday.

The State Department's annual report on religious freedoms around the world also noted "continued deterioration of the extremely poor status of respect for religious freedom" in Iran and highlighted "serious problems" in Pakistan.

Religious freedom is "integral to our efforts to combat the ideology of hatred and religious intolerance that fuels global terrorism," said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as she launched the 800-page report in Washington.

"Many individuals from various religious groups were targeted because of their religious identity or their secular leanings," it said of the situation in Iraq where US troops are facing an uphill battle to restore order.

In Egypt, a key US ally, respect for religious freedom has "declined," the report said, citing particularly a court ruling this year that reinstated a policy not to provide a legal means for converts from Islam to Christianity to amend their civil records.

The report also highlighted religious repression in China, which reportedly expelled more than 100 foreign missionaries in the spring of 2007 in what some groups alleged was a "government-initiated" campaign to tighten control on Christian house churches ahead of the Olympics next year.

The "Report on International Religious Freedom," transmitted to Congress Friday, is a precursor to the announcement each year of a blacklist of countries "of particular concern" that are subject to US sanctions for religious repression.

Iran headed last year's list alongside China, Eritrea, Myanmar, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Uzbekistan.
So in closing, the hypocrisy reeks to hell and these two-faced, closeted creeps pander to the "vote values" crowd while indulging in the very vices they legislate against. You know, one of these days I hope every one of these cock-suckers get caught! Meshers OUT!!!

The "Official" Explanation
Isn't it strange how there's an "official" explanation for every odd occurrence or seemingly evil government conspiracy? Lone and wacky gunmen like Lee Harvey and his magic bullet, those damn weather balloons, Gulf o' Tonkin, Remember the Maine, Pearl Harbor, who coulda knew, just to name a few. Well here we go again, courtesy RawStory....
Shortly before 10 am on the morning of September 11, 2001, amid rumors of a fourth hijacked plane headed for Washington, DC, a mystery aircraft appeared in restricted airspace over the White House. There has never been an official explanation for this incident, which has provided abundant fuel for 9/11 conspiracy theories.

CNN has now learned from two government sources that the mystery plane was a military aircraft and has determined that the blurry image on video appears to match photos of the Air Force's E-4B (discussed here on Wikipedia), a specially modified Boeing 747 with a communications pod behind the cockpit.

"The E-4B is a state of the art flying command post," CNN explained, "built and equipped for one reason -- to keep the government running no matter what, even in the event of a nuclear war, the reason it was nicknamed the 'doomsday plane' during the Cold War."

CNN acknowledges that, despite its identification, the absence of the aircraft from official investigations, together with the Pentagon's denial that it was a military plane and the insistence by the Pentagon, Secret Service, and FAA that they have no explanation for the incident, may continue to raise suspicions.

Not to mention the statistical likelihood of three buildings falling in their footprint, one of which wasn't even hit by a plane! Jet fuel, give me a break! PNAC wrote a few years prior that a "Pearl Harbor-like" event was needed to galvanize the American people, and voila there you have it. Meshers OUT!!!!

8.4 Mag Quake Hits Sumatra

This is the fourth big quake these guys have had since 2000. The Pacific Rim is moving, and we here in the S.F. Bay area must take note. The possibility of a major quake either here or in L.A. is almost a certainty in our lives, and definitely in 100 years. Courtesy Breitbart.com
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - A powerful earthquake shook Indonesia on Wednesday, killing seven people, injuring 100 and triggering a small tsunami that hit one city on the island of Sumatra, authorities said. Tsunami warnings were issued for much of the Indian Ocean region

The 8.4-magnitude quake off Sumatra badly damaged buildings along the coast and could be felt in at least four countries, with tall buildings swaying as far as 1,200 miles away.

It was followed by a series of aftershocks, the strongest of which registered at a magnitude of 6.6 and triggered a second tsunami alert for Indonesia, which was lifted about an hour later, said Suhardjono, an official with Indonesia's meteorological agency, who goes by only one name.

At least seven people were killed in three Sumatran towns, Social Affairs Department official Felix Valentino told the news portal detik.com. Phone lines and electricity also were cut. Most of the damage appeared to be from the quake.

A wave of up to 9 feet was reported to have struck the city of Padang about 20 minutes after the initial quake, Suhardjono said.

The earth is moving and changing. Take care to be prepared for what may come your way.

9/11, Six Years Later

Where are we as a nation six years after the tragedy of that fateful September day? Are our ports and borders more secure? Have we forged alliances and maintained the good-will of the people of the world? Have we done anything to divest from middle-eastern oil or develop new strategies and technology to deliver clean, domestically produced energy and transportation? Has anyone seen Bin Laden, other than in these periodic prerecorded appearances? Has there been any serious, independent inquiry into what really happened that day? The answer is NO. No, no, no...oh no, wouldn't be prudent at this junc-ture. Wake up America!

Massive Ice Melting at Unprecedented Rate
This article at ABC.com tells me that something is about to go down...

An area of Arctic sea ice the size of Florida has melted away in just the last six days as melting at the top of the planet continues at a record rate.

2007 has already broken the record for the lowest amount of sea ice ever recorded, say scientists, smashing the old record set in 2005.

Now a Few Words From Brother Russell

Good morning everyone. I awoke this morning with my subconcious mind still reverberating in my head. The Great Spirit always communicating in dreams. I wanted to share this version of the song "Celebrate" with you. I posted it a couple of days ago, but I took the best part of it and posted it here. It's really amazing to me how the 4 of us can merge musically in a song that we have never played together as a band. I want to thank all of the guys for giving me the space to be my strange self. I also want to thank them for having the courage to be themselves and be honest. Honesty is so rare these days. We are lucky to have this brotherhood of music. Thank you guys. I love you all - Chris, Carl, and Laird.

I thought I'd share this vintage 1997 pic of Russell and me (Meshers) rocking out at the Moonlight in Santa Rosa for a great crowd. The logo behind us is a band name we've been tossing around lately, I came up with a logo, so if you like it or hate it we'd like to know, so please email us! innerrhythmstudios@sbcglobal.net
PEACE MESHERS OUT!!
